Reaction to alone time – no training

May 10, 2011

The first week home when my husband left, little schnauzer was in his crate and I was in sight – yet he whimpered after a minute until I shushed – then he went back to sleep. Week two and he knows the game plan. He even goes into the crate in preparation for my husband’s leaving and rests.

Week two lunch time my husband comes home and the puppy has not been fully exercised yet. He refuses to play fetch (something he learned day four and loves) and just wants cuddles. Then when he tries to return to work the pup wants to go with him. He has not fully learned to stay seated when doors open, so this is something we need to work on. He clearly did not know what was going to happen.

After my husband made it out, I realized the pup didn’t know I was in the house, so I stayed hidden to see what would happen. For the first 1 minute he scampered back and forth through every room sniffing. The second minute he sat in front of the door and started to breathe heavy. Then he started racing again. At the 5 minute mark he was crying and completely upset, so I made myself known. While probably not the right reaction. I picked him up and cuddled him for a second and he went limp and happy again.
