My Review of Ruff Wear Portage Float Coat for Dogs

Dog paddling can only take your water-loving pooch so far. Cloak it in the Ruff Wear Portage Float Coat for dogs for extra floatation.

Pros: Tough

Cons: Expensive

Best Uses: Smaller Pets, Older Pets, Younger Pets, Larger Pets

Describe Yourself: New Pet Owner

We have a mini schnauzer puppy with a neck of 9.5″ and body 0f 14″. The XS fit perfect. When straps are pulled tight, only 1/3rd of the strap is used, but the 2/3rds of slack rolls up and velcros out of the way.  It will not get in the way when he needs to pee (issue in many jackets). Our guy is still growing and this will fit him throughout his life. The top strap for lifting him into a boat is very strong and well attached. This feature is not great on other brands and very important for us.

My only beef is the price – XS should be priced much lower than the large. REI sells then for $50. Zappos had them on sale for $39. Yet, similar vests for little dogs are $15 online and Petco has a store brand version that is about the same dimensions (He was size small in that one) for $20, but the handle is not well built.

If you are only going to use the vest rarely, I would not hesitate to get a cheaper vest. If you are regularly on the water, cough up the money for the Ruff Wear. It will last forever, not tear, and be more safe all around. Others I have seen will rip with wrestling, regular use, and lifting.

The Petco brand vest size S fit about the same. The outerhound did not.
